Washougal — English language teacher Chung Savoie was named Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year for the Washougal School District. She was honored for her work helping students from various backgrounds and cultures learn English, something she has some personal knowledge in. Savoie immigrated to America 17 years ago from South Korea, settling in Vancouver. She got her first teaching job in Camas and was hired in Washougal 10 years ago. “While the learning curve has been steep, I have enjoyed the opportunities afforded here in Washougal to take chances and to try new things that will improve the success of all students,” Savoie said in a release from the district. “It was the best move I ever made.” Savoie provides support to students throughout the district, which requires her to juggle her time between various buildings, and she has worked to revamp the model through which the district has provided this instruction by spending time co-teaching in classrooms and nurturing relationships with her peers to ensure the success of each student within the program.
