Witnesses said they saw fireworks set off near the scene of a grass fire along Northwest Erwin O. Rieger Memorial Highway Wednesday evening.

The fire was reported at 6:07 p.m. near Vancouver Lake.

Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Raymond Egan said the roughly 50-by-200 foot fire burned into some blackberries, and was out in about a half-hour.

As they worked, firefighters came across the remains of fireworks near where the fire started, according to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian.

Department spokesman Mark Johnson said witnesses also reported seeing people using fireworks nearby.

Although Wednesday was the first day of fireworks sales in much of the county, fireworks are prohibited in Vancouver, and users are subject to a $500 fine. A fire marshal was called to investigate.
