Midland ties rebounding mark in Washougal’s loss to Wapato

Sophomore had 12 points and 20 rebounds for Panthers

YAKIMA — Wapato’s hot first-half shooting, coupled with just six total turnovers, led the Wolves to a 63-44 victory over Washougal in in Friday’s Class 2A girls basketball consolation semifinal at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The loss ends Washougal’s season at 17-8 after a fourth-place finish at state in 2016.

Mason Oberg led the Panthers with 13 points and sophomore Toryi Midland had a double-double of 12 points and 20 rebounds (seven offensive).

Her rebound total tied the 2A tournament single-game record shared by three other players. It last was accomplished in 2007 by Ellensburg’s Kayla Standish.

The Wolves shot 17 of 29 in the first half (58.6 percent), including three 3-pointers, for a 37-23 halftime lead.

Washougal pulled within seven at 41-34 following a 3 from Ashley Gibbons with 3:27 left in the third, but got no closer the rest of the way. Wapato quickly made it double-digits again and led by 10 entering the fourth quarter.

Washougal committed 20 turnovers, good for 13 Wapato points.

Tarryn Hart had a game-high 25 points for Wapato, and Janealle Sutterlict added 17.
