Letter: Military increase unnecessary

America’s present military budget is close to $600 billion. President Trump’s proposal is to increase that dollar figure substantially each year over the next several years.

Let’s try to wrap our heads around this number: $600 billion is 54 percent of America’s entire discretionary budget; $600 billion is more money spent than the next 11 countries’ military budgets combined; $600 billion is nine times Russia’s military budget. The money in the first-year proposed military budget increase would build about 20 new I-5 bridges across the Columbia River, including all supporting infrastructure.

The reason most given for this proposed buildup is the need to “protect us.” This Orwellian statement is the textbook reason used by many present and historical dictatorial leaders such as Fidel Castro and Kim Jung-Un to control their people.

Look at the numbers. Don’t fall for the hype, rhetoric and emotion that is used on the masses as the weapons of reason. If we do, we are being played.

As we struggle to fund America’s roads, bridges and schools, let’s ask ourselves, “Where is our tax money and how much is enough to fund America’s military?”
