Weather Eye: No freeze yet this month, one step in right direction

The weather forecast kind of goes like this: rain today, then showers Friday, rain Saturday, showers Sunday and so on. You get the picture — wet. At least the next several days our highs will be in the low 50s rather than in the low 40s.

Wow, that is a slight improvement, I would say. If we can slowly inch up a notch or two as the days go by, we may see 60 degrees soon. Man, that would sure be nice. So many of us, including me, would like to see a good sign of spring. A clear sunny day and warm temperatures. But as I have written here before, March can elude us.

Now that we have a full week of March weather how is Vancouver doing? As of early Wednesday, we’d had 1.04 inches of rain, about a tenth of an inch above normal. The average mean temperature is 43.6 degrees, and that is, of course, below normal.

Our temperature extremes range from a high of 52 and a low of 35 degrees. No freeze yet this month! That’s a step in the right direction.

Clark County residents in the higher elevations had more snow early this week, and I have read some of their comments — and they are getting tired of it. Sorry, couldn’t share some of their worded frustrations here.

We sure need some warmth. Most of the winter, the East Coast was on the warm side, even record warmth, while us Northwesterners had way below average temperatures, and of course along with that came plenty of snow and ice.

Speaking of snow, our snowpack is looking great thanks to the last week or two of heavy mountain snow. It ranges from 125 percent of normal to 150 percent, so there should be plenty of water for summer needs. And actually March and April are important months for adding additional water storage in the mountains.

Looking ahead, I don’t see any extended period of warmer and drier weather, but sooner or later, we have to get a break. Maybe for spring break?
