Isaacs set to take ‘Trek’ helm

Jason Isaacs has some big shoes to fill.

The actor (“Awake,” “Dig”) has just been cast as the Captain Lorca in the new CBS All Access series “Star Trek: Discovery,” which is expected to premiere in either late summer or early fall.

The casting puts Isaacs in an elite club of actors who have taken command of a “Trek” series or films: William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula and Chris Pine.

Does Isaacs have what it takes? The 53-year-old British actor has a long list of roles that hint that he could be a good fit for the sci-fi series, which will feature a new ship and new characters, but is expected to dovetail with the ambitions and ideals of other “Star Trek” series. Notably, Isaacs took on the juicy role of Lucius Malfoy in the “Harry Potter” films, and he was the voice of The Inquisitor in Disney’s terrific “Star Wars Rebels” series.

Isaacs’ casting is the latest piece to fall into place for the much delayed series, which originally was supposed to debut early this year, then was pushed back to May, and now the fall.

On Twitter, Isaacs indicated that he hopes “Star Trek: Discovery” will be a long mission to the stars (pic.twitter.com/xwfdWAmBQW): “Nice chair. Hope it’s comfy.”
