Aloha and greetings from the Big Island of Hawaii! I must say it was sure nice to get off the plane Monday and see sunshine, palm trees and warmth I could feel clear to the bone. Must make this an annual affair after our winter weather in the Pacific Northwest.

The last day of winter turned out to be fairly nice Sunday, with clear skies and sunshine. Many areas around Clark County had a good frost. Pearson Field in Vancouver dipped to a chilly 30 degrees. Other reports in outlying areas were in the mid-20s. Winter had to make one last freeze for us, it seems.

Spring arrived on Monday and of course another weather system had to enter the scene with more rain and high Cascade snow. The week, as I mentioned in Sunday’s column, appears mostly wet with steady rain or showers at times. This pattern will continue through the end of March next week.

OK as promised, let’s review some rainfall for February from your friends and neighbors: Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 18.68 inches; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 9.13 inches; Bob Starr, Cougar, 22.47 inches; Phil Delany, above Dole Valley, 17.60 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lake Shore, 10.14 inches; Dave Campbell, one mile west of Heisson, 9.15 inches; Judy Darke, Felida, 9.72 inches; Larry Lebsack, Barberton, 10.75 inches; Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 11.70 inches; Chuck Houghten, Hockinson Heights, 13.05 inches; Jim Knoll, Five Corners, 12.07 inches; Bob Mode, Minnehaha, 9.52 inches; Irv St. Germain, Prune Hill, 11.35 inches; Murphy Dennis, Rawson Road near Clark County Rifles, 18.82 inches; and our friend Roland Derksen, from the Vancouver up north, with 5.56 inches. The official rainfall for Vancouver was 10.38 inches, nearly double of Vancouver, B.C.

Some of these reports were record amounts for February. March will go into the record books as a wet month, as we have already surpassed the normal amount of rain for the entire month. We’ll chat on Thursday and I’ll share how the weather is doing across the Pacific. A hui hou!
