Letter: Keep dogs out of market

I read about the Vancouver Farmers Market opening for the season. Years ago we went to the market regularly. At one visit, I saw a large dog with its head on a table with food for sale. When I spoke to the market manager and objected to having dogs in the market, she said that there were more people who liked dogs there than didn’t. She suggested that I find another market. I did. We generally go to the Portland Farmers Market, which does not allow pets, other than service animals.

I wish that the Vancouver market would adopt a more enlightened stance about dogs in the market. It is getting more crowded and difficult to navigate through the market. It is not a healthful or sanitary situation. This is no different from grocery stores. Many people think of dogs as family members, and they are. But in a public food market, they are still dogs and do not belong there.

I have no objection to legitimate service dogs at the market. However, many people claim that their dogs are service dogs when it’s obvious that the dogs aren’t providing service. This isn’t fair to the legitimate service animals, who get lumped together with the fake service dogs.
