BANDON, Ore. — Oregon police have released the name of the girl who died after a waterlogged log rolled on top of her.

Aurora Sheffel, 14, was standing on top of the log with friends while taking pictures at the South Jetty Park Beach on Saturday, the Eugene Register-Guard reported. Shaffel was the last one standing on the log when it shifted in the surf and rolled. Police said in a news report that the tide was receding heavily during the time of the incident.

Shaffel was the daughter of Cora and David Wederquist of Eugene. Her parents said the straight A student that was at the beach celebrating spring break and her recent selection into North Eugene High School’s cheerleading team.

“She was really mostly a nerd,” David Wederquist said. “Straight As. But she thought she’d give cheerleading a try. She was just a great kid; you couldn’t ask for one better.”

Shaffel’s relatives have set up a GoFundMe page for funeral expenses. As of Tuesday, the donations surpassed the relatives’ $5,000 goal.

Eugene School District spokeswoman Kerry Delf said the high school will provide support for the students when they return to class.

Oregon State Police Sgt. Kyle Hove recommends that future beach visitors read safety tips found on Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s state parks’ website beforehand.
