Prep roundup: Skyview softball claims playoff spot with win

Two home runs by Abby Fischer helped the Skyview softball team outlast Union 13-11 on Friday in the regular-season finale in the 4A Greater St. Helens League.

Fischer was 3 for 4 and had three RBI.

Skyview pulled ahead with a six-run sixth inning.

Mikelle Anthony and Nicole Christensen each had three hits and an RBI for the Storm, which will face Battle Ground in a playoff game at noon Saturday at Battle Ground for the third seed from the 4A GSHL.

Union’s Anna Aguon was 2 for 2 with a home run, Maleya Burns was 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI, and Erin Miller had a homer and three RBI.

Battle Ground 12, Heritage 8 — Alexis Morrison was 2 for 2 with a double, home run and five RBI for the Tigers. Danielle Joli was 2 for 3 with two RBI and was the winning pitcher with seven strikeouts.

Bayleigh Snaric and Alana Nuttman were each 3 for 4 with an RBI for Heritage.

Camas 3, W.F. West 1 — Kennedy Ferguson struck out 14 batters while walking one in a four-hitter as the Papermakers won the non-league game.

R.A. Long 5, Hockinson 4 — The Hawks rally fell short after giving up five runs in the third inning. Despite the win that tied R.A. Long with Woodland and Washougal for fourth place in the 2A GSHL, Woodland gets the final playoff spot via tiebreaker.

Washougal 9, Mark Morris 1 — Kayla Lagerquist piched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts as Washougal won its season finale.

Evergreen 13, Woodland 9 — Carissa Cutler was 3 for 4 with a home run, four RBI and the winning pitcher for the Plainsmen. Kate Sangandorf also went 3 for 4 with a double.

Girls tennis

4A District — The top four singles and doubles seeds advanced to today’s semifinals at the Vancouver Tennis Center. The four singles semifinals did not drop a set Friday.

Last year’s Class 4A state runner-up Hannah Gianan of Camas had a first-round bye and then posted a 6-0, 6-1 win in the quarterfinals. No. 2 seed McKenzie Schreiner of Union did not lose a game in her two matches.

The top three placers in singles and doubles move on to bi-district.

3A District — No. 1 seed Juwoon Kim of Mountain View won both her matches 6-0, 6-0 to reach the semifinals at the Vancouver Tennis Center. The top four seeds in singles and doubles advanced to the semifinals.

2A Sub-district — Columbia River’s Faith Grisham, last year’s 3A district champion, dropped just one game in reaching the semifinals at Mint Valley Racquet Club in Longview. She will face Washougal’s Kassidy Baldwin, who won her first match with a second-set tiebreaker, and then a 6-4, 6-4 win in the quarterfinals.
