Girls tennis: River’s Grisham clinches berth to 2A state tennis tournament

Mountain View has solid day at 3A bi-district event

Columbia River’s Faith Grisham advanced to singles final of the 2A district tournament, clinching a berth to state.

Grisham dropped three games in two straight-set wins. She will face Rachel Wilkerson of Centralia in the final on Saturday.

Three local doubles teams remain alive for the last berth to state.

Janice Kolesnikova and Tabitha Raynor of Columbia River will face Rebecca Boylan and Beyonce Be a in the third-place semifinal. Kristy Haagen and Madi Beckley of Hockinson are in the other third-place semifinal.

3A bi-district — Mountain View doubles team of Anna Lu and Sabrina Wang qualified for state as they reached the semifinals with two victories on Friday at Spanaway.

Avery Honaker of Hudson’s Bay also booked her spot to state by going 2-0 in singles to reach the semifinals.

Mountain View has seven of its eight players still alive at bi-district. Eva Winsheimer and Dayna Vitek will have to face teammates Sam McCarthy and Grace Garmire in the consolation semifinals. Both went 2-1 with McCarthy and Garmire coming back from down a set and 5-2 in the second to win their last match of the day in a super tiebreaker 10-5.

Juwoon Kim, the 3A district champ, is in the consolation singles semifinals.

The Hudson’s Bay doubles team of Kayla and Kacianne Smith are also in the consolation semifinals.

4A bi-district — Union’s McKenzie Schreiner and doubles team Nicole Knudtson and Elysha Fu qualified for state as did Skyview’s doubles team of Sarah Morgan and Karly Metz.

Morgan and Metz had to come from a set down to win their quarterfinal 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Knudtson and Fu won their match 6-0, 6-1.

Schreiner won two of three singles matches to secure a state berth.

Still alive for a fourth trip to state is 4A district champ Hannah Gianan of Camas. However, she’ll have to get up early Saturday to do it. Gianan lost a three-hour, three-set battle against Maddie Egan of Rogers in the quarterfinal 7-6 (6), 2-6, 7-5. Gianan’s loser-out match was then moved to 7:45 a.m. Saturday.
