PORTLAND — Portland fire and rescue officials say a fire forced nine people from a Southeast Portland apartment building in the middle of the night.

KATU-TV reports that crews were called at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday on reports of a fire at the Hamilton Park Apartments.

Officials say a couch in a second story apartment caught fire, and the flames spread to a wall and onto the back patio.

The first floor apartment below suffered water damage while crews worked to put out the fire.

The American Red Cross stepped in to give the seven adults and two children who were living in the damaged apartments food, water, and temporary shelter.

There was no immediate information on the cause of the fire.
