A woman crossing the street to get her mail was struck by an oncoming vehicle Tuesday late afternoon west of Lucia Falls.

Clark County sheriff’s Sgt. Tony Barnes said Sylvia Van Houten, 69, went to check her mail at around 5 p.m., which meant crossing Northeast Lucia Falls Road, where she lives.

Justin Bullock, 19, of Vancouver, was heading west in his car, Barnes said. Bullock was going too fast to see her in time. He locked up his brakes, Barnes said, and struck Van Houten.

Van Houten was injured and hospitalized, though her injuries didn’t appear to be life-threatening, Barnes said.

Barnes said deputies were still investigating the crash and no charges had been recommended.
