State tennis: Kabacy, Gianan, Union doubles reach 4A semifinals

Clark County players guaranteed tennis medals

Two singles players and two doubles teams from Clark County reached the Class 4A semifinals at the state tennis tournament on Friday.

Skyview junior Andrew Kabacy advanced to the 4A singles semifinals at Columbia Basin Racquet Club in Richland with two victories.

After crusing past Luke Andrewjeski of Wentachee 6-2, 6-1, Kabacy had a battle in the quarterfinal. He was able to hold off Yevgenly Kolomlyets of Cascade 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Next up is Kyle Fager of Lewis & Clark on Saturday morning. Fager placed fourth at state last year.

Camas senior Hannah Gianan, aiming to reach the state final for the fourth year in a row, opened with a 6-0, 6-0 first-round win, and then reached the semifinals with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Ali Topp of Olympia.

Gianan, a two-time state doubles champ and last year’s singles runner-up, will play Teagen Mach of Newport in Saturday morning’s semifinal.

Union doubles teams moved into the semifinals with straight-set victories.

Andrew Chanthavong and Alex Calpagiu had wins of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-3 to guarantee them a state medal by reaching the semifinals. Nicole Knudtson and Elysha Fu also sailed into the semis with wins of 6-3, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-2.

All semifinals are at 8:30 a.m. The singles finals are scheduled for 1 p.m. and the doubles at 2:30 p.m.

Skyview’s Sarah Morgan and Karly Metz will play for fifth place in doubles today after going 2-1 on Friday. Battle Ground’s Gunner Harlan is still alive in the fourth-place boys singles bracket as well.

Mountain View brought the most players from Clark County to the Tri-Cities with nine players in the 3A event. However all were eventually eliminated after playing a total of five three-set matches and 31 overall sets.

At 2A, Columbia River sophomore Faith Grisham is in the fourth place semifinal. She won her first match 6-2, 6-0, but then lost 6-2, 6-1. Also, Washougal’s Soeren Serve is in the fifth-place semifinal after winning his consolation match.

6-1, 6-4.
