Support for Early Learning and Families will rally for improved access to early childhood education at a forum Thursday.

The Our Children Can’t Wait movement’s Call to Action Forum will discuss solutions to Clark County’s low-rate of school readiness for its youngest learners: infants and children up to the age of 5.

The forum follows the release this year of the “State of Our Children and Families Report,” which found that 43 percent of Clark County children aren’t ready for kindergarten on the first day. That’s slightly lower than the state average of 47 percent.

SELF Director Debbie Ham noted that the report “detailed where our community’s greatest disparities exist: children living in poverty, homeless, Latino and those for whom English is not their first language.”

The forum is from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at Clark College Gaiser Hall at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way.

Ridgefield School District Superintendent Nathan McCann, Vancouver City Councilor Anne McEnerny-Ogle and a panel of parents and child care officials will present at the forum. There will also be roundtable discussions, and participants will sign an “action pledge” at the end.

The event is free, but participants must register by Sunday.
