Letter: What happened to telling the truth?

By Jim Moody, Vancouver

I don’t know whether to be angry or sad. The newspapers are full, once again, of reports of lying and cheating and stealing.

Just in one days’ news: Brazil’s President Michel Temer, former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, Oregon Project coach Alberto Salazar, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, a former Vancouver bookkeeper, and, of course, President Trump, all caught lying, cheating or stealing. And they’re just the tip of the iceberg. Are schoolchildren still taught about the George Washington myth? Remember — “I cannot tell a lie”?

I’m sick and tired of it. Disdain for the truth is poisoning our society. Who can I trust? Are cynicism and “me-first” to be the hallmarks of America’s culture and society? To quote our veracity-challenged president, “Sad, real sad.”
