Letter: Health care must focus on people

Dear members of the U.S. Senate:

First, thank you for being a public servant. You are my full-time, temporary employee. You work for me, not the other way around.

Is that clear?

The ball is in your court on health care. Don’t waste your time trying to “fix” or “revise” the abomination put forth by the House. You must start over. From scratch. Here’s an idea: Sit down quietly, close your eyes and forget about parties for a minute. Think about people. All people. Not just the ones in your social circle.

If you could start over with no restrictions, what would you want for yourself and your family? What would you want for your wives, daughters and granddaughters? Would they be at the mercy of a bunch of old men to decide what’s best for them and their bodies? What would you want for those with conditions like diabetes, heart disease, asthma, etc.? How about those with cancer, mental illness and addiction?

Most other civilized countries offer universal health care in one form or another. Why don’t we?

Think outside the box, the Beltway and your party. Then just make it happen. Thank you.
