A 70-year-old Vancouver father was arrested on Memorial Day after allegedly shooting his 50-year-old son.

William Wayne Terry, 70, is being held at the Clark County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault. Police said he is accused of shooting his son, Mark Christopher Terry.

The shooting was reported about 11:40 a.m. Monday at William Terry’s home at 8619 Mount Thielson Ave., in the Vancouver Heights neighborhood.

Police arrived to find Mark Terry outside a neighbor’s house, suffering from a gunshot wound, reportedly to the abdomen.

William Terry was inside the house. He initially refused to come out of the home, leading to a SWAT call-out and a brief standoff before he surrendered. He is expected to make a court appearance Tuesday morning.

Drew Small, who said he lives six houses down from Terry, said he was returning with his wife from a well-baby appointment when he saw a police car blocking his driveway. He said he saw three officers put on helmets and march down the street with military-grade rifles. He said that shortly afterward, an armored vehicle drove down the alley.

“It was super scary because I had my infant with me,” he said. “But the police seemed pretty calm.”

Small said that he knows the elder Terry.

“He seemed like a really sweet old man,” said Small, who recalled seeing him working on old trucks. “I know that he’s been having disputes with his son.”

Columbian archives show that both Terrys are longtime local residents. William Terry, who goes by his middle name, Wayne, is listed as the property owner where the shooting occurred. Mark Terry been convicted twice of domestic violence assault in Clark County, in 1998 and 2004.

Mark Terry was taken to a hospital for treatment; his condition was not available Monday evening.
