I found myself nodding my head as I read the letter from James Maynard (“Our Readers’ Views,” Nov. 12). I too, have tried communicating with Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler. My letters and phone calls are ignored. The people in her office are very polite, assuring me that they don’t know the answer but will ask the congresswoman and get back to me. They take my information and thank me for calling. I never get a response. Was I asking too involved or difficult questions? I decided to keep it simple.
About three weeks ago, I called and asked, “How does the congresswoman feel about adding $1.7 trillion to the national debt?” (That’s $1,700 billion for a total debt of about $20 trillion.) They didn’t know her thoughts on that and promised they would get back to me. They haven’t.
That seemed like a straight-forward question that she should be able to answer. The numbers regarding the debt are so large, I don’t think most people are able to grasp their enormity. I thought Rep. Herrera Beutler was a fiscal conservative. Apparently not.
