Letter: Wake up and smell the oil

Several days ago while returning from a hike at Vancouver Lake Park, I decided to take “the scenic route” back to town by way of West Port Way and Eighth Street, crossing under the railroad tracks.

The smell of oil permeated the air and even with the windows closed the smell was so strong that it was causing respiratory effects on two of my passengers so that all we wanted to do was get out of there and away from the toxic stench. In the meantime the air was filled by the sound of machinery with valves venting who knows what.

I would suggest that anyone concerned about the future of our clean air, noise pollution and health issues take the time to experience what I did and decide firsthand what might be the future of our community.
