Fire District 6 firefighters quickly extinguished a kitchen fire Tuesday in an apartment in Hazel Dell, preventing it from spreading to other units.

The Red Cross is providing assistance to a Vancouver family of four due to the fire, according to the agency’s Cascades Region office.

An initial call about the fire came in at 3:38 p.m. at the Parklane Apartments, 10265 N.E. Notchlog Drive, and firefighters were on scene a minute later, said fire district spokesman Dave Schmitke. The fire district deployed three of its engines and Vancouver Fire sent assets, as well, Schmitke said.

When responders arrived, they spotted smoke escaping the back of an upstairs apartment, Schmitke said.

The origin of the fire was in the apartment’s kitchen, but the cause remains under investigation by the Clark County Fire Marshal’s office, he said.

Firefighters put out the fire within two minutes.

“The damage was limited to that unit’s kitchen,” he said.

Red Cross said it arrived at the apartment at 9 p.m. The fire affected two adults and two children, according to the Red Cross.

The family is having their immediate needs met by the disaster relief agency.
