Arnada — Relevant Coffee scored a first-place finish in the Cascadia Cup Roasting Competition held Nov. 11 at Buckman Coffee Factory in Portland. The cup is made up of 50 roasters from around the Northwest. Each competitor was given 20 pounds of the same green coffee with no information on the growing region, elevation or coffee varietal. After studying the unroasted coffee, Mitch Montgomery, owner and roaster, developed five roast profiles for his team to taste, and the barista team spent the next few days cupping and tasting the samples. They narrowed it down to one choice they liked, and submitted that. Relevant was picked by the judges as their favorite roast in the competition.
