Letter: CHIP program should be saved

A Washington Post story told how the CHIP program has been allowed to expire by Republicans in Congress (“Congress lets CHIP expire,” Oct. 2, The Columbian).

CHIP means the Children’s Health Insurance Program. The program covered roughly 9 million kids at a cost of $13.6 billion. These children most likely would not have received health care benefits another way. This program serves poor and underserved families. We have some people in Clark County who are glad they are covered. There is not a replacement plan.

I would love to see Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, defend letting the program expire, and then compare her own coverage to that of regular folks in the county. Is she brave enough to speak her mind? Is she really just following the mean-spirited plans of House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell? Does she have compassion for the rest of us?
