Letter: Use energy to show love

When did the definition for “different” come to mean hate? Those who believe that different ideas or opinions instantly trigger the desire to protest, and then their protests turn into riots, portray hate to the rest of us watching their actions. To us watching, it accomplishes zero except to destroy.

Protests have never changed my mind. Action through voting and getting rid of those policies or politicians is what helps me to change my mind. Where does this strong emotion for different opinions, religions and political parties come from, and why? What turns this strong emotion into hate, where people are hurt and property damaged? Why is it so easy to hate and hard to love?

I believe it is simply too much “self.” It is such a “me-first” nation that people are blinded and do not see the person next to them. Hopefully, you are never incapacitated to the point where “self” can’t help and you will have to depend on someone else. It may be a clich?, but it takes more muscles to frown than to smile, and more useless energy to hate than to love.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
