Letter: Preserve Iran deal

Why would our country withdraw from a nuclear agreement that has successfully shut down any path for Tehran to build nuclear weapons?

For nearly two years, this deal has guarded against a nuclear-armed Iran and the risk of another U.S. war in the Middle East. Yet, despite Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford both testifying to Congress that remaining in the Iran deal is in the U.S. national security interest, President Donald Trump has threatened not to certify Iran’s compliance with the deal by the Oct. 15 deadline. This failure to act would put the U.S. on a path to reimpose sanctions, violating the terms of the accord, and showing that we cannot be trusted to keep our promises.

Saving this deal is important both because it can stop a slide toward war with Iran and because of what Trump’s decision tells North Korea.

Each citizen and member of Congress who can visualize what nuclear war would do to every living thing on the planet should speak up immediately against scrapping this effective deal with Iran.
