Letter: Regulate guns like tobacco

The Las Vegas massacre illustrated, yet again, the horrific amount of gun violence in the United States. Contrast the gun violence in our country with that in other developed countries such as our neighbor, Canada, and others like France, Japan and Sweden. Note how Australia’s gun-law reform has proven highly effective in reducing gun violence.

The well-developed “gun culture” in the U.S. was started in the mid-1800s by Oliver Winchester. Today the National Rifle Association lobby represents the arms-and-ammunition industry developed from Winchester’s time. It is all about money! It is time for that huge and lucrative industry to be regulated, just as the tobacco industry has been.

The Second Amendment argument is a ploy that the NRA has used very cleverly. (We no longer live in the time of muskets used by the militia!)
