VANCOUVER — Rebecca Skloot, author of the bestselling book “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” will be the featured speaker at the Fort Vancouver Regional Library Foundation’s fund-raising event on Nov. 8.

The Authors & Illustrators Dinner will be from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Hilton Vancouver Washington, 301 W. Sixth St.

“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” tells the story of a poor black woman whose cells were taken without her knowledge in 1951. Known to scientists as HeLa, those cells never died and became a ground-breaking tool in science and medicine.

They became instrumental in cancer research, developing the polio vaccine, AIDS research, gene mapping and virus research.

Tickets to the dinner and silent auction, the foundation’s signature fund-raising event, are $85 each. There also are a limited number of tickets available for a private reception with Skloot for $50 per person.

Tickets can be purchased through the foundation’s website, fvrlfoundation.org; for information, call 360-906-4700.
