Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in a head-on crash early Saturday morning near the intersection of Southwest Capitol Highway and Southwest Freeman Street, Portland police said.

A passenger in one of the two vehicles was taken to a Portland hospital with life-threatening injuries after the crash, reported at about 1:50 a.m., police said. A passenger in the other vehicle was taken to a Portland hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Garret W. Scheckla, 21, was at the Multnomah County Jail, accused of driving under the influence of intoxicants, third-degree assault, three counts of reckless endangering, and reckless driving.

Police said Scheckla, driving a blue 2000 BMW 323, was traveling south on Southwest Capitol Highway and drifted into the northbound lanes as he approached Southwest Freeman Street. The BMW then collided with a northbound Subaru Impreza.

The passenger with life-threatening injuries was in the BMW; the other injured passenger was in the Subaru, police said.
