Fort Vancouver junior Emily Phelps won the Steve Maas Run-A-Ree on Friday at Hudson’s Bay High School in the traditional start to the cross country season.

She posted a time of 18 minutes, 51 seconds over the 5,000-meter obstacle course to beat out Skyview runners Krystal Kaufman (18:52) and Ellen Burbank (18:55).

Skyview did win the girls team title with 29 points thanks to Kaufman, Burbank and Presley Timmons placing 2-3-4.

Union was second in the girls team scoring with 50. Fort was third with 92 for the program’s highest finish at 57th annual race.

Phelps was Fort’s first individual winner of the Run-a-Ree since Anna Aoki in 1995. She won by using a patient approach, taking the lead with roughly 600 meters to go, then held off Kaufman and Burbank down the stretch.

“I wanted to start out slow and gradually built,” she said. “It felt good. I was just trying to get that win.”

Heritage’s Ryan Cibart ran away with the boys title, completing 5,000 meters in 16:15. Skyview’s Bruce Erickson was second (16:31), and Fort’s Drew Weber third (16:47).

Union won the boys team title with 37 points, placing its five scoring runners in the top 14 of the race. Micah Goff, Aaron Avery and Owen Murphy finished 5-6-7.

Skyview was second with 65 points and Heritage was third with 70.
