How Clark County college football players fared, Sept. 9

By Micah Rice, Columbian Sports Editor

Taylor Nelson was set on redemption.

The senior linebacker was one week removed from his Southern Utah team allowing 77 points in a season-opening loss at Oregon.

Saturday, the Union High School graduate made sure that wouldn’t happen again. Nelson had a team-high eight tackles, one sack and recovered a fumble in a 51-14 win at Stephen F. Austin.

“Obviously we were embarrassed last week,” Nelson said. “We didn’t want to play another game like that, so the coaches really challenged us to be more aggressive. We were on our heels a lot last week, and I think that’s what helped us is we were just aggressive.”

Nelson was among a handful of local standouts on the college gridiron Saturday.

Central Washington quarterback Reilly Hennessey (Camas) improved to 2-0 as a starter.

Jordan Suell (Fort Vancouver) had a 29-yard touchdown catch as Southern Oregon improved to 2-0 with a win over College of Idaho.

Erik Powell (Seton Catholic) made both of his field goals, including one in overtime, as Washington State won a 3-OT thriller over Boise State.
