Letter: Act on climate change

By Richard Hill, VANCOUVER

As the Southeast U.S. coast braced for possibly another one-in-1,000-year weather event, many of our leaders continued to deny what scientific studies and the vast majority of climate scientists say is happening to our planet, i.e., that the earth is warming at an alarming rate.

These leaders, including “45,” (President Donald Trump says it’s a hoax by the Chinese), the governor of Florida (who bans the terms “climate change” or “global warming” in official communications), and many of our state and local elected officials just keep repeating “it’s not global warming.” Say it with them, over and over: “it’s not global warming.” Keep saying this mantra.

Obviously, “45” believes in this logic as he has used it for any number of positions that were just not true, and you can ignore the overwhelming mounting scientific evidence that is being observed in real life. Remember, these are 1,000-year weather events. Another Katrina, Harvey or Irma won’t happen again for 1,000 years. Don’t worry, be happy. Say the mantra.

If five respected medical professionals tell me I have a serious medical condition that needs to be addressed, I do not ignore them. After the third one, I start to believe them and plan on what to do next.

You cannot just say the mantra. You must do something.
