I was happy to read Jess Weeks’ letter on June 21, about Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler supporting early education in the U.S. (“Support early education“).
I’m also thankful that Herrera Beutler not only thinks about the education of U.S. children, but also of those children internationally. She supports H.Res. 466 to boost the Global Partnership for Education’s three-year plan to increase quality and access to education in the poorest countries around the world. Education and poverty are linked; one extra year of schooling increases an individual’s earnings by up to 10 percent, according to the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The GPE’s goal is to get 25 million more children in school by 2020.
I have seen, firsthand, the desperate need, as well as the love of education, by children during my trip to Kenya this summer.
Thanks to Herrera Beutler for realizing that everyone needs education, no matter where they live.
