After being closed for nearly three weeks, the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 between Hood River and Troutdale have reopened to traffic.
The freeway closed on Sept. 4 because of the Eagle Creek fire. The westbound lanes reopened on Sept. 14.
Due to continuing fire activity at Shellrock Mountain, the Oregon Department of Transportation has diverted eastbound traffic onto the westbound lanes near milepost 52. For a 1.2-mile stretch, eastbound and westbound traffic will each travel on one 18-foot wide lane in each direction.
This configuration, which moves traffic farther from the fire and possible falling trees, will be in place for the foreseeable future. Bicycle traffic is not allowed on this section of the highway.
In addition, the speed limit for this section has been lowered to 50 mph.
