Letter: Many people disrespect the flag

It is so easy to disrespect the flag and done so often. I see it being flown diagonally, not vertically, and torn practically to pieces on the backs of pickups and motorcycles. It is flown over businesses while almost torn to shreds. It is not taken down in the rain, ice storms or blizzards and not illuminated at night.

While teaching high school, fully one-quarter of my class would not stand nor participate in the pledge because of their religion, when I knew they did not attend any church. Where did this lack of respect come from? I go to games and see many men with their hats still on or sitting during the anthem. I’ve had moms and kids sitting next to me carrying on a conversation or texting during the singing of the national anthem. We have let our respect die of indifference.

To show disrespect for something, you have to realize it is something to respect. The sports figures apparently have enough respect for the flag to realize it can be disrespected — something many of our so-called upright citizens don’t seem to understand.
