In Chris Tobkin’s Sept. 22 letter, “U.S. is crackpot regime,” the statement that “50 percent of its citizens oppose its current ruler” is not correct. I know several small young citizens who don’t even know who the “ruler” of the United States is. I think Tobkin meant “voters.” Even those numbers are tricky.
Actually, no one person received more than 50 percent of the vote.
In a country of 325 million, in 2016 we had (in round numbers) 218 million registered voters. Of those, 133 million actually voted (www.statisticbrain.com). That leaves about 85 million who don’t care or they are happy with whoever wins. That is more votes than anyone received. The Democratic Party candidate received 64 million votes or 48 percent; the Republican Party candidate received 62 million votes, or 47 percent, and all others received seven million votes or 5 percent. That means more than 50 percent did not want Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump.
If any of you are in the group of 85 million who didn’t vote and are now complaining, you really missed the boat this time. You should have let your ballot speak for you.
