Letter: Strive for a more perfect union

When did dropping to one knee become a sign of disrespect? For centuries Catholics have genuflected in church, before bishops, cardinals and the pope as a sign of humility and respect. Knights kneel before their king or queen. To me, kneeling during the national anthem before the flag acknowledges that we still have an imperfect union, striving to reach the goal of liberty and justice for all.

I am the widow of a Vietnam-era veteran who later died on active duty. He did not die in service to a flag. He served a country striving to form that more perfect union. As long as hatred and division persist in our country, we will never reach that goal.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
