Community notebook: Prairie tops Battle Ground in high school rugby

The Prairie Wolfpack rugby team got the better of rival Battle Ground Bulls for the Pat Jenkins Memorial Kuru Trophy, winning 20-17 on Friday at Laurin Middle School.

Prairie surged ahead 20-5 as Aaron Brumley, Austin Craft, Jake Boost and Trajveion Douglas each scored tries.

Battle Ground closed the gap with a converted try by Colin Friese, who scored the Bulls first points, and a score by Brock Robinson.

Prairie, Battle Ground, Oregon City, and Reynolds are all tied for first at 4-1-0 in the Oregon Rugby Varsity Single School Division.

Union is seventh at 2-2-1.

Union, sitting in seventh place at 2-2-1, beat Centennial 64-10 on Saturday at Delta Park.

Union next plays Oregon City at 10 a.m. Saturday at Skyridge Middle School in Camas. Prairie plays Lincoln at noon on Saturday at Delta Park in North Portland; and Battle Ground plays Reynolds at 1 p.m. Saturday at Reynolds High School.

Skyview leads GSHL lacrosse

The Skyview high school lacrosse team improved to 4-0 in the Greater St. Helens League with recent wins over Camas and Columbia River, both by 14-5 scores.

Carson Kiichle had six goals and two assists for Skyview in the win over Columbia River on Friday.

Skyview (8-0 overall) next plays Union (2-8, 2-2) at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Camas High School. Skyview had two non-league games that follow: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tualatin, and 11 a.m. Sunday against Bellingham at Ridgefield High School.

Columbia River beat Union last week, 12-11 in overtime. Nick Frichti had five goals in the game for River, which also beat Aloha 17-4 on Saturday. Jacob Ayers had four goals and an assists in that game.

Columbia River (6-5, 2-2) plays at Camas (1-7, 0-4) at 6 p.m. Wednesday, and is at Wilson of Portland at 8 p.m. Friday.

The GSHL season runs through May 2.

Local gymnasts qualify for nationals

Naydenov gymnast Ellie Weaver placed first on all four events at Level 10 at the USA Gymnastics Region 2 Meet in Tacoma over the weekend to clinch a spot at the Junior Olympic Nationals on May 12-13 at Cincinnati.

Joining her from Clark County is Camas sophomore Kaylee Sugimoto, who placed fifth in the all-around at Level 10 to earn her spot at nationals. Sugimoto competes for the Multnomah Athletic Club.

Evergreen tennis team wins title

The Evergreen Tennis has a Northwest champion team.

The United States Tennis Association men’s 3.5 league team recently won the Pacific Northwest Area title by winning three doubles and two singles matches.

Team members include Andy Thorburn, Brian Eldridge, Jason Hill, Ramon Tuason (captain), Greg Mikol, Francisco Rivera, Gary Doyle, SP Lin, Pete Kovalenko, Lee Dockstader, Tim Johnson, and Andy LaFrazia.

Pine Crest course record broken

Steve Elliott shot a 22 to set a course record at the par-3 nine-hole Pine Crest Golf Course in Salmon Creek on Monday.

Elliott, whose record was witnessed by Kyle Barrett and Jackson Young, broke the previous course record of 23.
