TACOMA – Camas took four wrestlers to the semifinals.

Danny Snediker of Union took down a two-time state champion.

And Josiah Sanders of Woodland took nearly everyone by surprise.

The Mat Classic state wrestling championships always includes many storylines, some predictable and some not. Friday’s opening day at the Tacoma Dome was no exception, with 14 local wrestlers remaining in contention for state titles.

Camas qualified seven wrestlers to Mat Classic, the most of any Clark County school. Friday, the top Papermakers largely held true to form.

Rylan Thompson and Tanner Craig, ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, at 132 pounds, both won two matches Friday. The teammates could meet in the state title match Saturday evening.

Sam Malychewski of Camas is also into the semifinals. The state’s top-ranked 195-pounder could be headed for a fifth showdown this season against Skyview’s Jackson McKinney, who also cruised through two matches.

Gideon Malychewski, Sam’s younger brother, is into the semifinals at 160 pounds. For the Malychewskis, chasing state titles is a team effort.

“Sometimes if I’m down or if I lose, he’ll pick me up,” said Gideon Malychewski, a sophomore. “And I’ll do the same. It’s really encouraging having him. It’s his senior year, so I’m just enjoying every bit of it that I can.”

Union advanced two wrestlers to the semifinals. Noah Talavera, ranked No. 3 at 138 pounds, took down No. 6 ranked Jacob Vanderwaal of Tahoma in the quarterfinals 5-1.

Snediker knocked off the No. 2-ranked 152-pounder. He scored a 6-2 quarterfinal win over Curtis’ Adrian St. Germain, who won 1A state titles the past two years at Vashon.

“I didn’t really look at it like I was facing a two-time state champion,” said Snediker, who entered Mat Classic ranked No. 6. “I look at it that every opportunity is out there. I’ve just got to wrestle my best. I’m just going to push forward and win that state title, hopefully.”

Sanders, a 113-pound Woodland sophomore, looked like he was headed for a quarterfinal loss. He trailed Stephen Aguilar of Wapato 8-3 in the final round.

But Sanders pulled off a stunning victory, reversing control and pinning Aguilar with 59 seconds left in the match.

“He exposed his shoulder and I was like this is make it or break it right here,” Sanders said.

For inspiration, Sanders credited a come-from-behind win in last week’s regional tournament against Eddie Matias of Centralia.

“He helped me learn about how deep I can go,” Sanders said. “I want to thank him a lot because of how far he pushed me.”

Four other local 2A wrestlers are also in the semifinals.

Dawson Lieurance of Ridgefield, the No. 3-ranked 220-pounder, advanced with two first-round pins. He made it look easy, though it wasn’t.

“It’s very hard,” he said. “It’s a lot of offseason work, practicing your craft and doing everything you can to win those matches out there.”

Wasougal’s Tanner Lees also won convincingly twice. The No. 3-ranked 145-pounder advanced with a first-round pin and a 16-0 quarterfinal win.

Logan Knudson of Columbia River is in the semifinals at 152 pounds. He survived a quarterfinal match against Anthony Aguilera of Cheney, 8-7.

Hockinson’s Dale Anderson reached the 145 semifinals. He cruised through the quarterfinals, beating Ryan Saylor of Bremerton 11-2.

State title hopes are alive for two local 3A wrestlers. Evergreen’s Dylan Goodpaster, the top-ranked 170-pounder, advanced with a first-round pin and a first-minute injury default.

Mountain View 106-pounder Noah Messman won each match in commanding fashion, 10-3 and 12-2. The freshman wasn’t fazed by Mat Classic’s big stage, where 24 matches occur simultaneously in front of several thousand spectators.

“It’s just a wrestling match,” Messman said. “It’s not any bigger just because it’s at the state tournament. I don’t try to make a big deal out of it.”
