TACOMA – Riley Aamold was quickly in control of her match. She could have cruised to victory.

Thinking of her team pushed her out of cruise control.

The Union freshman pinned both of her opponents Friday at the first day of the Mat Classic state wrestling championships at the Tacoma Dome.

Aamold  gave the extra effort to get those pins because of the extra points they’re worth in the team competition.

“In the beginning I was thinking ‘just get the win, get points,” Aamold said. “But I really want Union to win for the first time.”

Aamold, a 130-pounder, was among four Union girls to reach the semifinals Friday. Annabelle Helm, who also got two pins advanced at 145 pounds along with teammate Neveah Cassidy. Krista Warren advanced at 140 pounds.

That has the Titans in good position to make a run at the team championship Saturday. Union’s 43 points are three ahead of Yelm, which had just two wrestlers reach the semifinals.

Three other Clark County girls also reached the semifinals.

Hudson’s Bay sophomore Allison Blaine also has state-title aspirations. A third-place finisher last year, Blaine pinned both of her 135-pound opponents Friday.

“There’s been a lot of pressure, especially since everybody I know knows that I can do it,” Blaine said. “I know I can do it. Just actually doing it is where the hard part is.”

Woodland’s Ashlyn Daugherty placed fifth last year. The 100-pound junior used that experience to power her through two wins Friday, including a 4-2 overtime win over No. 3-ranked Melanie Flores of Moses Lake in the quarterfinals.

“It’s helping me be calm during my matches and not be so antsy,” Daugherty said. “You’ve got to keep a positive mindset.”

Washougal senior Brooklyn Wurm-Wertz reached the 140-pound semifinals in commanding fashion. She earned a 12-2 quarterfinal win over Othello’s Elizabeth Giles, who placed fourth last year.

Skyview 105-pounder Hikaru Abe had her quest for a second consecutive state title derailed in the quarterfinals, losing by pin to Bellarmine Prep’s Alina Collins.
