In the Feb. 12 Columbian was a news story from the Mayo Clinic News Network: “You might be washing your hands wrong.” In it, the director of Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group says that you should not touch the door handle after washing your hands.
While that seems to be in the no-brainer column, I find it equally obvious that most public restrooms hang their doors incorrectly.
Why are doors hung in restaurants and business bathrooms so that you push the door to enter the restroom, but have to pull the door to exit? If doors were hung the other way around, think of the tons of paper towels we wouldn’t have to use to protect our hands from the dirty door handle.
I’m sure those paper towels are costing these businesses a fair amount of money, not to speak of the additional waste. Simple changes can save a lot.
