Letter: Suggestions for gun safety

I am a former police officer and a gun owner who usually carries a concealed firearm when in public. I strongly believe that two things need to be done to make this world safer from gun violence and mass shootings.

First, we need to restrict firearm magazines/clips to no more than 10-round capacity. That means semi-automatic pistols currently with up to 17-bullet capacity and assault rifles currently up to 30-round clips and 75-round drums. The government needs a buy-back program for magazines/clips above those capacities, coupled with mandatory jail time for violators.

Second, when a mass shooting occurs, all media must never show the picture of the shooter nor state his name. They can give every other detail about the crime and the person’s life but never show his picture nor state his name. This will deprive the shooters of the personal notoriety so many of them seek.

I know the NRA will oppose the magazine/clip restrictions and the media will oppose the name/picture restriction, but how many dead school kids and Sunday worshipers do we need sacrificed to gun violence? Everyone needs to give up a little to make our society, particularly our schools, safer.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
