“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

— Martin Luther King Jr.

Tomorrow is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This year the holiday happens to fall on his actual birthdate, Jan. 15, 1929. Had he lived, he would be 89 years old. One has to wonder what he would have thought of the 21st century and all of the changes — good and bad — that have taken place over the past eight decades.

To learn more about the man who would come to play such a key role in the civil rights movement and American history itself, consider adding one of the following titles to your New Year’s reading list. You’ll find books by and about Dr. King and a PBS documentary produced in 2016 that examines the past fifty years of African-American history. This is not a comprehensive list of material about Martin Luther King Jr., so please remember to search the library’s catalog for more MLK-related titles in print, audio, eBook and downloadable audio formats.

• “Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise” (DVD), PBS Studio.

• “Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Final Year,” by Tavis Smiley.
