Weather Eye: Sun today, then storms blow in

What can I say about Saturday’s weather other than it was nice? Skies were sunny and area temperatures hit the low 60s. Vancouver reached 58. With calm winds, it felt a bit like early spring.

Some folks were driving around town yesterday in their convertibles with the tops down. Many donned sunglasses and shorts.

Does it get any better than this for mid-January? Highs were much more than I anticipated the other day, but no complaints here. It was even nice along the coast, with highs at 60 or better and clear skies and sunshine. A rarity.

For the month, Vancouver has an average mean temperature of 42.7, two degrees above average. The highs on Thursday, 58, and Friday, 53, helped push that statistic up. It’s a far cry from January 2017 when we were in a deep freeze.

What is the outlook this coming week? Expect another pleasant day today with increasing high clouds. As the week goes on, we get a series of storms with periods of rain and possibly snow in the Cascades. A little more rain here locally would help. We are running about .6 inches below normal.

Is there a chance of snow here in the county as January moves on? I see some weather forecast models showing colder air aloft, filtering in by the end of the week with snow most likely down to the Clark County foothills. We will keep a weather eye out if that should change and snow levels drop lower. After all, it still is January, right?

Our high here in Vancouver as of 4 p.m. yesterday was 58 degrees, just one degree short of tying the record high of 59 degrees set in 1991. Remember, our average high for the date is 47 degrees. Saturday morning’s low was 44 degrees, which i close to the average high.

Old man winter is probably smiling at us thinking, “Pay me now or pay me later.” Still plenty of winter left and I’m sure he will blow his cold air on us eventually.

Stay tuned.
