East Vancouver — In Traci Johnson’s leadership class, at Shahala Middle School, students have a service sheet with a number of items they can do to earn points in the classroom. All the tasks focus on service to others.

One of the items was to create and execute a service learning/community project.

Jamon Bowers, a sixth-grader, built and stocked a “blessing box” that he keeps in front of his house. Another sixth-grader, Stella Dahl, collected food and blankets/beds for shelter dogs.

Gabrielle Adams, an eighth-grader, gathered some friends who filled clothing bags at Children’s Outreach International.

The clothing will go to Vancouver Public Schools students who are living in the foster care system or in poverty.
