LEWISTON, Idaho — A northern Idaho man police say fatally stabbed a Washington woman for $800 has been charged with first-degree murder.

Cole J. Marcell, 24, of Kamiah was charged Friday in 2nd District Court, the Lewiston Tribune reported. Bail was set at $1 million.

The body of 32-year-old Sarah N. Warden of Clarkston was found July 7 at Mud Springs Pond near Winchester in Idaho.

Authorities say her body might have been in the pond for as long as a month. An autopsy found slashes and puncture wounds that authorities say appeared to come from a knife. Warden was last seen on May 31 in Clarkston.

Court records say Marcell had planned to rob Warden of an $800 check. Marcell was arrested Wednesday, and police say he had a large knife and Warden’s debit card.

Marcell was under suspicion after telling two other inmates at the Clearwater County Jail, where he was incarcerated last month on unrelated charges, that he stabbed Warden “in the throat,” according to police.

Police also say that Marcell said two others were involved in Warden’s death. He said they were a man and a woman but didn’t identify them. According to Marcell, the unidentified man grabbed Warden out of a vehicle and slashed her throat. Marcel said he “barely” cut Warden’s throat.

The case is being tried in Nez Perce County because Marcell told police Warden was killed near Waha, about 22 miles from where her body was found.

It’s not clear from online records if Marcell has an attorney.
