Search and rescue divers on Wednesday afternoon found the body of a man who drowned near Paradise Point State Park on Tuesday, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

After rescue swimmers were unable to find a reported swimmer in distress Tuesday evening, searchers working into Wednesday recovered the body of Michael C. Keith, 41, of La Center around 4:20 p.m.

Police and fire crews first responded to the park early afternoon Tuesday after bystanders reported seeing a man struggling in the river near the park, yelling for help.

The sheriff’s office said one witness called 911, and the other attempted to paddle out in a kayak to help the man, but he went under before the kayaker got close.

Clark County Fire & Rescue and Clark County Sheriff’s Office dive teams searched the area through sundown Tuesday, but did not locate Keith. He was presumed drowned.

Starting Wednesday morning, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office dive team joined the search. Keith’s body was recovered near the park, in 55-degree, 20-foot deep waters.
