Washougal — Washougal High School senior Ulysses Ramel won the 2018 Clark County Youth Commission’s Youth Achievement Award for education for his three-dimensional printing projects.

Ramel used his interest in 3D technology to make mold examples for use in the school’s baking and pastry class, and wrote step-by-step instructions for other students on how to create a positive mold using available software.

Hillary Marshall, the school’s librarian, nominated him for the award. “Ulysses demonstrated perseverance as Chef (Brenda) Hitchins and I were creating a brand new unit of study and he created multiple molds as examples,” Marshall said in a release from the district.

“His attention to detail was exceptional as he explained why designs worked or failed and helped me to understand the software, so I could deliver clearer instruction.” Ramel also worked with other students, creating 3D key chains and drink coasters for the school’s unified sports to help them promote themselves.

He plans to join the Air Force and attend college to study mechanical engineering.
