Community notebook: Area Little League all-star district tournaments get under way

Area Little League baseball and softball district tournament begin this weekend with teams having their sights on state tournaments.

Here are the scheduled dates for the upcoming tournaments as posted on the district websites:

8-10 baseball: District 4 is June 23-29 at Fort Vancouver Little League.

District 6 is June 23-29 at Battle Ground Little League.

District champs advance to state July 7 at Lynnwood.

9-11 baseball: District 4 is July 2-7 at Evergreen Little League.

District 6 is June 23-26 (27th if necessary) at Salmon Creek Little League.

District champs advance to state July 14 at Sea-Tac.

Major baseball: District 4 is July 7-12 (13th, if necessary) at Fort Vancouver Little League.

District 6 is June 22-29 (30th if necessary) at Salmon Creek Little League.

District champs advance to state July 21 at Sedro-Woolley.

Junior baseball: District 4 is July 2-7 at Evergreen Little League. Winner to state July 14 at Yakima.

8-10 softball: District 4 is June 25-29 at Columbia Little League.

District 6 began June 16 and runs through June 19 (20th if necessary) at North Clark Little League in Yacolt.

District champs advance to state July 7 at Cheney.

Major softball: District 4 is June 18-23 at Evergreen Little League.

District 6 began June 16 and runs through June 19 (20th if necessary) at North Clark Little League in Yacolt.

District champs advance to state June 30 at Vancouver (Columbia Little League host).

Junior softball: District 4 began June 18 and runs through 21 at Evergreen Little League. Winner to state June 30 at Poulsbo.

Showtime slips to third in pool play at Georgia

The Showtime College Prep baseball team of Vancouver lost for the first time Monday at the 17th annual 18U WWBA National Championship in Cartersville, Ga.

Showtime fell 5-1 to Team Elite 17U Prime of Winder, Ga., in pool play. Showtime scored its only run in the seventh inning and had six hits.

Showtime is in third place at 3-1-1 in its eight-team pool with two games to play. The top team advances to single-elimination bracket play on Thursday.

There are 56 teams in this tournament that is taking place outside of Atlanta.

Lightning postpones Victory match

The Vancouver Victory’s Evergreen Premier League soccer match against Oly Town Artesians on Sunday was postponed due to lightning over the Harmony Sports Complex.

The Oly Town Twitter account posted this on Sunday: “That storm was crazy. When we arrived, it was 87 degrees. When we called the game, the temperature had dropped to 62 degrees and lightning was still striking every minute.”

No word on when the match will be rescheduled.

Vancouver (3-2-0) next plays Seattle Stars (5-2-0) at 4 p.m. Sunday at Harmony.

Local wrestlers at Cadet Dual nationals

Four Clark County wrestlers were part of the Washington team that participated at the Cadet National Duals in Spokane that wrapped up on Saturday.

Noah Messman of Mountain View High School, Logan Smith of Skyview, and Scott Lees of Washougal competed on the Washington Blue squad, while CJ Hamblin of Covington Middle School competed on the Washington team.

The Washington team placed first in its pool in Greco-Roman and second in the Gold/Silver pool. Hamblin, wrestling at 145 pounds, was 3-1 overall.

Washington Blue was third in its pool and sixth in Bronze/Copper pool. Lees (132 and 138) was 2-0 with two pins, Smith (138) was 2-2 and Messman (113) was 0-3 overall.

In freestyle, Washington was first in its pool and seventh in Gold/Silver. Hamblin went 2-3 overall.

Washington Blue was fifth in its pool and first in Yellow pool. Messman was 2-1, Smith was 3-1, and Lees was 2-1.

CCRC has second Heritage HS 5K run

The Clark County Running Club has its second Heritage High School 5K run at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The fast, flat course is hosted by the Heritage track and cross country teams.

The first Heritage run last Wednesday had Dan Nehnevaj, 20, of Vancouver coming in first with a time of 16 minutes, 46 seconds. Second place was Jesse McChesney, 30, of Vancouver in 17:40. The top women’s finisher was Katarina Mueller, 26, of Vancouver in 19:24. She was 13th overall.

CCRC wraps up June with the Grass Valley 5K at 7 p.m. June 27 at Grass Valley Park in Camas.

Masters rowing at Vancouver Lake

The U.S. Rowing Northwest Masters Regional Championships will be held Friday through Sunday at Vancouver Lake Regional Park.

Masters rowers are age 27 and up.

Heats begin at 10 a.m. Friday with the last race at 5:20 p.m. On Saturday, racing begins at 8 a.m. and continues until 5 p.m. Sunday events begin at 8 a.m. with the last event at 2:42 p.m.

Rowers are competing for spots to the national championships, Aug. 16-19 at Lake Merritt in Oakland, Calif.
