Letter: Use inspections to keep roads safe

With the increasing number of license plate scofflaws, primarily in Clark County, it’s no wonder that there is an increasing number of Washingtonians driving around with one plate. The state issues two plates, and by law you are required to display one on the front and one on the rear with year/month tags on the back plate. You can get an exception, but it has to be approved by DMV.

The state should save money and issue only one plate for the rear, with the month of issuance stamped on the plate, and only issue one year sticker. That alone could save a lot of money annually.

Also, since the emission requirement is ending in 2019, why not start a safety inspection instead? Make it an annual requirement with a small fee, checking for license and insurance initially, then safety issues like: working lights, tire tread life, cracked windows, working wipers, illegal tint, etc. The primary result of the inspection would be to ensure the driver has a valid license and insurance, then vehicle road worthiness for public safety. Secondary would be funds for roads. It could also generate jobs.
