Letter: Ashamed of my citizenship

By Andrea Buchmann, Vancouver
Published: June 24, 2018, 6:00am

I was not born in this country, but 20 years ago, I fulfilled a dream that is shared by many people around the world … to become a U.S. citizen. I am proud of my Canadian heritage but have always been equally proud to say that I am an American citizen. That is, until now.

The pitiful cries of children, literally ripped from the arms of their parents have been heard around the world. What must the rest of the world think of us? Since the current administration came into being, I have consistently questioned its decisions, but now, for the first time, I’m ashamed to call myself an American. This isn’t who I am. This is not who we are as a people. This is America, not Nazi Germany or a third-world dictatorship.
